Doc screenings in London. Horses for courses, really

By Hussain Currimbhoy 25 January, 2010

I'm back like snow-wash denim and socks with pom-poms on the back.

My first duty back in the chair is to check out some of the new docs about to be launched at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) next week where highlights from South America and Africa will be taking up a lot of room in the cinemas. Rotterdam is always a place for surprises in documentary because of their long, broad taste in film and their dedication to representing the best from as many regions as poss'. Its me 4th IFFR. Oh yes, there wil be photos.

For the Londoners with an appetite for rambunction, do not miss 'Moving To Mars' (our opening night film no less) at the ICA until Feb 3rd.

If you like that, and even if you don't, check out director, Mat Whitecross's Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll fiction about the singer Ian Dury.

What can't Whitecross do...

Also at the ICA is Liz Mermin's 'Horses' from Jan 28th. Another doc/fest standout that is getting cinema action for those who like their docs a little weird but rather wonderful. This is an unusual doc that asks a critic question of character to its stars. Horses. A slight departure from 'Shot in Bombay' or 'Team Qatar' but if that's why we like it!
