The debate about authenticity is constant in documentary and most strident when filmmakers cross the border into fiction. Penny Woolcock’s latest film, 1 Day, which follows a Handsworth gang member’s release from prison and the war that ensues between rival gangs, has already provoked accusations of “perpetuating stereotypes”. 1 Day: Take 2 is a portrait of Handsworth through the eyes of those young people Penny found to play the characters in her drama. The films, made with the help of the NFTS, invite the audience to consider “ways of seeing”, with Penny Woolcock and filmmakers Nicole “Justice” Inniss and Dylan Duffus.
