Boldly co-authored with its protagonist, Ninxs follows the journey of teenager Karla, who navigates adolescence as a young transgender person.
In the small Mexican town of Tepoztlán, 15-year-old Karla is coursing through all the typical milestones for someone of her age: experimenting with makeup, practicing for the school cheer team and being embarrassed by her parents. But despite the efforts of her deeply supportive family, Karla lives in a world where her identity has become a talking point, things have become slightly more complicated. Ninxs follows Karla over a formative period, from late childhood into her teenage years, as she grapples with the complexities, joys and uncertainties of coming-of-age as a transgender person. In his feature directorial debut, Kani Lapuerta gives Karla the space to tell her story on her own terms. Her personality positively explodes off the screen, making this a joyous, anarchic and genre-defying exploration of trans adolescence.
Content Guidance: Film contains depictions of transphobia, racial stereotyping, and staged images of death and slapstick gore.
