As a coda to our Ogawa tribute, we are pleased to show this film about the recent fortunes of the legendary Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. Co-founded by Ogawa, the YIDFF surfed a “wild energy” for years, incubating new Asian non-fiction film. But like many of the ideas of Ogawa, its radicalism and collectivism clashed with funding realpolitik. Ogawa Pro alumnus Toshio Izuka made A Movie Capital, about the first YIDFF in 1991. Sixteen years later he returns to find whether that wild energy is still there and what has happened to the YIDFF’s network of volunteers. The result reveals much about culture in the age of neo-liberal capitalism and about Ogawa’s – and Japan’s – ideas about social commitment.
