“My family needs help. My family is broken.” In Buffalo New York, a family is in crisis. Twenty-one year old Karen is pregnant by new boyfriend Courtney, an ex-gang member who hasn’t given up the ways of the street. Karen’s mother is grudgingly paying their mortgage, but can’t speak to Karen without it ending in a shouting match. Tearing everyone’s heart apart is Maya, Karen’s baby daughter, who is dying from a rare genetic condition. Returning to the family fold to see if she can help is Karen’s big sister Sharon, herself pregnant and happily married – unlike her parents, who openly despised each other when the girls were growing up. Can Sharon and her grounded husband Jason help repair family ties, or will their interventions backfire? This gripping observational documentary takes us inside a family at breaking point, with intensely personal scenes which will remain with you long after the credits roll.
