Addicted in Afghanistan
Jabar and Zahir are 15 year old Afghans, best friends and nearly inseparable. They are also heroin addicts. In fact, of the million Afghans estimated to be drug addicts, 40% are women and children. Zahir’s mother introduced him to opium to stave off the boredom of a life of poverty, but found he quickly moved on to harder stuff. Jabar’s father is a lifelong heroin addict, hopeful that the focus of the camera might somehow help break the cycle. Both Jabar and Zahir recognise their lives are being blighted by their habit, as do concerned professionals, but getting clean is nearly impossible for the strongest of souls, much less susceptible teenagers. While Jabar is quick to blame the Americans for his woes, he finds he can be his own worst enemy. Following the boys for a year, Director Jawed Taiman deftly illustrates the vicious cycle of addiction and the devastation it wreaks on families.
