Extreme Private Eros (Kyokushiteki Eros, Renka 1974)
Few films smell so much of their times than this dauntingly personal account
of the life of the filmmaker's ex lover Miyuki Takeda. He films her move to
Okinawa, her lesbian affair with a bar hostess there, and her professed love
for an African American soldier. Takeda's feminism and confidence is exciting at first but soon seems wrong-headed. Her attitude to the Okinawan is
patronising or worse. Striking scenes abound. At one point filmmaker Hara
cries in front of his own camera. At another, her films Takeda giving birth,
close-up, the image completely out of focus because he was so nervous. Throughout the film you feel those nerves, that strain, and the strain of the times. Brilliant, uncensored, and sobering.
