Thaw Htoo and his family lived in a Thai refugee camp after escaping the brutal Burmese regime. In the middle of the jungle, the BBC’s radio service gave him a window to the outside world through a small transistor, until the day came they were told they were being relocated as refugees to our very own Sheffield, a town that may as well be a million miles away from home. More than a city of steel, Sheffield has a long history of welcoming those from across the seas. Back home, Thaw Htoo was a civil engineer, but in Sheffield he has to start from scratch. For his kids school may be hard, but getting gas in the house is harder. Like thousands of migrants to the UK, Thaw Htoo and his fellow Burmese neighbours must come to terms with a new life while keeping their ethnicity and sanity intact. UK director Mat Whitecross gains remarkable access into their daily life and captures moments of frustration, beauty, and revelation before they reach common ground.
