Nippon Sengoshi: Madamu Onboro No Seikatsu
The legendary, unpredictable, director Shohei Imamura never gave a toss about Japanese politeness and didn't identify with the conventional left.So it was no surprise that he abandoned epic, colour, 35 mm fiction film for this grungy black and white documentary about one of cinema's most insolent women. Madame Onboro wasn't particularly educated and had the instinct for self preservation that Imamura loved in women. So he sat her down and showed her images of Japan's history - the war, the emperor, etc, and filmed her comments. What she says is delightfully fresh, then infuriating, sometimes stupid or self serving, then deeply insightful. A brilliant portrait of a canny mind.
