Only When I Dance
At the prestigious Centro de Dance Rio, two students stick out: Irlan for his graceful movement, which makes him one of the most promising young ballet dancers in Brazil; and Isabela, whose prospects are limited because her skin is black. Both teenagers are from tough working class favelas, and determined to dance professionally to lift their families out of the poverty they have always known. Guided by their tough talking patron Mariza, they throw themselves into international competitions – the only way to be noticed and secure a coveted scholarship. As the single-minded Irlan clears each hurdle in his path, Isabela finds life much more stressful, as do her family, who have to scrape together money they don’t have to fund her travel. Director Beadie Finzi follows Irlan and Isabela during a dramatic year when everything, it seems, is on the line.
