In cramped sheltered housing in Harlem, 9 year-old Priscilla is practicing her rapping with her daddy Jesse. He lived a rapper’s high life in the 80s, but fell to the ground with a drug-dealing conviction that saw his two girls sent into foster care. He has now got them back, and he and Priscilla are working on her dream to be the rapping sensation her father never was. It seems to be working – soon Priscilla ‘P-Star’ Diaz releases an album that goes platinum, is rapping to packed venues, and spends much of her signing bonus on bling, managed by her well-meaning but flawed dad. Over the next four years, the talented P-star develops a star’s persona, leaving little time for her home schooling or being a normal kid. As P-star matures, her future looks bright but Jesse struggles to stay in the picture. Throughout the good and the bad times, their drug addict mother’s absence is keenly felt, in an engrossing film about living the American dream, and the ties that bind.
