Pink Taxi
Uli Gaulke’s evocative documentary examines yearnings and human relationships, by following a trio of women taxi drivers as they ferry their passengers around bleak, wintery Moscow, musing about love.
There might be more than three million cars in Moscow, but only twenty-two of them are pink taxis – driven for women by women. Uli Gaulke’s evocative documentary examines yearnings and human relationships, by following a trio of women taxi drivers as they ferry their passengers around bleak, wintery Moscow. Divorced mother of two Marina is determinedly upbeat, enjoying a drink and a laugh whenever she gets a chance. She eschews people her own age, and longs for love to come her way again, after the husband she had devoted her life to went off with her niece. Her taxi driving fuels her grown daughter’s gym habit, just as the stories of life and love she elicits from her passengers feed Marina’s hunger for human connections. Through Marina and her colleagues, who have also suffered in love, Gaulke weaves a unique portrait of modern day Russia, whilst underscoring the universality of the longings that drive us all.
