Legendary writer William S Burroughs was the heir to the Burroughs adding machine estate and could have had it pretty easy. But a life long struggle with addiction, authority and himself meant he could be nothing else but a writer. Enigmatic and hungry to expand his understanding of the world through writing, Burroughs’ experimented with the boundaries of writing at just the right time in American culture. His work spanned gay culture, the counter-culture movement and after Penning cult classics like Naked Lunch he became the godfather of the Beat Generation. Featuring footage of Burroughs and exclusive interviews with some of his closest friends including John Waters, David Cronenbreg, Iggy Pop, Peter Weller, Anne Waldman and many others, Burroughs the man begins to take shape. Director Yony Leyser expertly tracks the development of an icon through the banning of his works by the government and the killing of his wife. They do not make writers like this any more.

"’William S. Burroughs: A Man Within’" does real justice to the Beat writer, gun nut and literary icon.” – John Anderson, Variety
