Toshio Kashiwagi is used to caring for outsiders. For forty years he has worked with the disabled, heading a special needs school in Okayama prefecture. Now 73, he runs a special taxi service, which never makes a profit, but is rewarding in the long-term friendships it yields with his customers. In his spare time he looks after his collection of motley stray cats, keeping a close eye on the outsider tomcat trying to invade it. His wife Hiroki runs a charity that sends home helpers to visit the elderly and disabled. One of her charges is 91-year-old Shiro Hashimoto. He is dying from lung cancer, even though he still smokes his “Peace” brand government-issued cigarettes, and muses about his days as a soldier. By taking his camera into the most anonymous corners of Japanese life, rising doc star Kazuhiro Soda has crafted a simply told, absorbing study of compassionate coexistence.
