Gun Fight
In 21st century America, “campus shooting” has become an almost commonplace phrase. Yet since the terrible massacres at Columbine High School and Virginia Tech, it’s easier than ever to get a gun in the land of the free. Two time Oscar winning director Barbara Kopple examines the issue that continues to so bitterly divide American society. Leading the pro-gun fight is the National Rifle Association, the country’s most effective lobby which wields almost mindboggling influence over lawmakers. Whilst effectively blocking the most modest of gun control proposals, the NRA’s emotive rhetoric has fostered an alarming subculture of vigilante militia. Meanwhile, American cities like Philadelphia are being destroyed by the abundance of guns in circulation, with no end to the violence in sight. Virginia Tech victim Colin Goddard, now a gun control activist, finds that buying an arsenal of weapons with no background check proves much easier than getting politicians to seriously take steps towards reform.
