The Punk Syndrome (Kovasikajuttu)
It’s not just that Pertti Kurikka's Name Day is an unusual name for a band; it’s quite an unusual band in itself. Each of its four members have learning difficulties and have grown up well aware of their differences. Now they belt out their emotions in heartfelt, full pelt punk songs – building up a huge, affectionate fan base in their native Finland. Their leader Pertti struggles with a range of emotions as he pens their angry lyrics, his anxieties manifesting themselves by his need to obsessively examine the seams in everyone’s clothes. Lead singer Kari is hoping to move out of his group home, and become engaged to girlfriend Sirkka – but is not entirely sure what married life will entail. In this enjoyable, life affirming film, we follow them as they play to bigger and bigger gigs, at the same time dealing with the everyday frustrations of being “different”.
