By some distance, Americans are the most medicated nation in the world. With every one of the thousands of drugs on the market needing to be heavily tested, an entire subculture exists of desperate people who allow themselves to be used as human guinea pigs. Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher return to Doc/Fest with a second haunting feature to provide a disquieting focus on a side of America we seldom see. They introduce us to a range of people who have repeatedly took part in drugs trials, for cash. Critically, we also hear from the other side of the fence: an ex drugs rep who vividly describes the lengths that drugs companies go to push their brands, and how drugs trials cynically feed their marketing efforts. A beautifully made, deeply concerning exploration of the human cost of the market-driven, ethics-free US drugs industry.
