Indie Game: The Movie
Their goal in life is to make games that their 13 year-old geeky selves would love. Welcome to the fascinating subculture of indie game developers. Unlike mainstream video games developed by hundreds of people, indie games are passion projects, often developed alone. Working around the clock, living on a pittance with long suffering relatives, it’s an often bleak existence endured for the promise of future glory and riches. An early art award for Phil Fish has brought worldwide attention to his game Fez, now four years in development. But nasty legal wrangling with his former business partner threatens to derail the game’s unveiling at PAX, a major video-game expo. First time feature directors Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky prove their skill at stylish story-telling by following the drama of Fish and other developers, as they watch work feverishly to finish their games – and watch how the online world reacts.
