Like the Dogma experiment which came decades later, Man with a Movie Camera lays its heart on the sleeve with the opening titles, declaring that it would use neither screenplay, theatre, sets, nor actors. Its scope, frenetic pace, and kaleidoscope vision took audiences aback in 1929, and still astonishes today. It took Vertov, and his cinematographer brother four years to film over 1,775 separate shots (his brother refused to ever work with him again). Vertov’s wife edited them into a simple “storyline”: 24 hours in the life of a Russian city. The only recurring ‘character’ is the 'Man with a Movie Camera' – a theme interspersed with scenes of Russian life is the making of the film itself, including the opening shots, which depict an audience sitting down to watch this very film. A must-see for anyone interested in the history of documentary, this is a cinematic delight.
