American environmental photographer James Balog is on a mission. His frequent trips to the Antarctic presented him with dramatic evidence that glaciers were receding at an alarming rate. He embarked on an ambitious project: to demonstrate this visually by installing time-lapse cameras to capture the movement of some of the world’s greatest glaciers. He and his crew dramatically risk life and limb putting these delicate electronics in the harshest conditions on the planet. To Balog, the undertaking was an absolute necessity: “The public needs an understandable piece of visible evidence,” he says. “Something that grabs them in the gut.” You will not soon forget the mission’s breathtakingly stunning, and equally heartbreaking, findings – nor should you. A beautifully rendered portrait of an environmental visionary, Chasing Ice should be mandatory viewing for the leaders of the world who continue to bicker about the extent of our impact upon this fragile earth.
