The Story of Film: An Odyssey
A rare chance to hunker down and enjoy a thrilling cinematic journey – all 900 minutes of Mark Cousins’s epic series The Story of Film: An Odyssey. Made over six years, Cousins travelled the world to explore the impulses and innovations that shaped global cinema throughout the decades, from the silent era to the digital age. Cousin’s highly personal, reflective style of film-making conveys his passion in every sequence – the treasure trove of more than 1,000 archive clips bearing testimony to the richness of the form. Eschewing overanalysis of the machinations of the film industry, Cousins focuses instead on how film-makers are influenced both by the historical events of their times, and by each other. “It’s easy to understand why a film fails, but much much harder to understand success,” says Cousins. “I tried to ask the bigger question of when it works, how does it work, and what is it about it that works?”
The Story of Film: An Odyssey screens theatrically for the first time in the world continuously in its complete 900 minute form this year at Sheffield Doc/Fest. Beginning at 09:00 on Sun 17 June, this marathon screening is free and open to all.
