At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, few people realised that four out of five starters on the gold-winning Soviet Union basketball team were not Russian, but Lithuanian, forced to play basketball for the regime that had terrorised them for decades. Just four years later, they rose to beat Russia, their former oppressors, in the Barcelona Olympics, becoming symbols of democracy in their newly liberated country - and sporting jerseys sponsored by the Grateful Dead. In entertaining interviews and archive, Marius Markevicius details how the sport of basketball has been integral to developing the confidence and national identity of this tiny nation of 3 million people. A number of sports commentators – and New Yorker editor David Remnick – shed light on the remarkable sporting triumph of the Lithuanians. Meanwhile, interviews with the players themselves provide much intriguing detail – particularly regarding their determination when touring abroad in the Soviet days to spend their free time in the manic acquisition of goods to smuggle back home.
