They should have known it would be like a red flag to a bull. When a United Arab Emirate asked American provocateur filmmaker Caveh Zahedi to make a film about “art as a subversive act”, it came with a big proviso, namely: do not make fun of the Sheik! Previously unaware of the Sheik’s existence, Zahedi now can’t stop himself from poking at him from every angle as he carries out his commission, with entourage and two year-old son in tow. Zahedi’s style is immensely pleasing – he narrates the story with disarming candour, illustrates it with animation and playful editing, and succeeds in making a very funny film which nonetheless provides real insight into the UAE, and lives played out in the shadow of oppression. Thanks to the presence of several always-on cameras, it’s also a memorable masterclass in gonzo-style filmmaking.
