In January 2011, when the Egyptian revolution breaks out in Cairo, jubilation is in the air. After three decades, the end finally looks near for Hosni Mubarak and the state of emergency law he ruled under. Co-directors Karim El Hakim and Omar Shargawi alternate between filming the protests in Tahir Square, and retreating back to El Hakim’s nearby apartment, where they discuss events with their mixed group of Egyptian and expat friends. Very quickly, the mood darkens, and scores of tear-gas wielding secret police and armed thugs infiltrate the crowds. El Hakim becomes increasingly worried for the safety of his young family, particularly when his street proves to be a hub for pro-Mubarak supporters on the lookout for camera-sporting foreigners. The frightened, turbulent camerawork, and the frequent mood swings of those watching the rapidly unfolding events, dramatically reflect the chaos of a desperate atmosphere in which nothing is certain.
