"It won't be any good to have a democracy if you don't have a country," says President Mohamed Nasheen, curtly. He has recently been ousted from power by supporters of former dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Jailed, tortured, and forced into exile, the president was instrumental in bringing a fledgling democracy to Maldives, a "paradise on earth". And it really is breathtaking: aerial shots of the archipelago show rounds of green in an expanse of turquoise. But the effects of global warming are painfully clear here as the low-lying islands are being eaten away. As a nation - and with it a 3,000-year civilisation - rapidly disappears under the waves, the president confronts the world with passion and vehemence, culminating with the chaotic 2009 Copenhagen Climate Summit. Seasoned documentary filmmaker Jon Shenk delivers one of his most brilliant works in this portrait of a crusader.
