While most teenage girls have pop stars as their idols, Masha only has eyes for Vladimir Putin. Born in 1989, Masha grew up in a post Soviet Russia, where luxury consumer goods and foreign holidays were for the first time available to ordinary Russians. Now Masha has catapulted to the top of Putin’s student youth movement, Nashi. The chillingly Nazi-reminiscent organisation exists to further democracy, Russian-style – by carefully cultivating its members to hate Putin’s enemies with a passion, and to act on their hatred. Journalist Oleg Kashin is one of Nashi’s most outspoken critics. He and other like minded journalists befriend Masha, who is beginning to lose her doe-eyed devotion to the cause. First time feature director Lise Birk Pedersen’s cameras observe from deep within the Nashi movement, as well as in the frenzied opposition demonstrations, where the threat of attack is always imminent. In scenes of astonishing intimacy, we watch Masha’s gradual political awakening.
