He's SeaWorld's biggest and most lucrative attraction -- a 12,000 lb whale named Tilikum, treasured for both his astonishing showmanship, and prodigious sperm. But Tilikum is also known for something else -- his 2010 killing of one of the company's most experienced and beloved trainers. In this critically acclaimed doc, Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite shows how, far from being an isolated incident, the attack was a death waiting to happen -- and in fact had happened twice before. An intelligent and social species -- adult male orcas never leave their mothers’ sides -- there is no record of orcas doing any harm to a human in the wild. Held for decades in captivity in cruel conditions, however, is a different story. A string of very candid ex-SeaWorld trainers, and shocking archive illustrate a tale that casts a spotlight on a corner of the leisure industry in dire need of reform.
