In the summer of 2008, some 70 people from 15 separate expeditions braved the pilgrimage to the world's second highest summit. Situated between Pakistan and China, K2 is the unceremoniously named mountain of the Himalayas that took the lives of 11 climbers. With far more challenging and treacherous terrain than its famous relation Mount Everest, K2 is known as the climb to conquer for serious mountaineers. Piecing together interviews from those who survived, a polyphonic and at times contradictory story emerges. Did the weather go wrong? Was it poor planning, lack of experience, bad luck? Together with writer Mark Monroe (The Cove), director Nick Ryan creates a compelling narrative made up of multiple perspectives, time frames, actual video documentation, and beautifully recreated footage. Especially for those of us who are adventure seekers, The Summit serves as a sobering reminder of the thin line that lies between safety and danger, life and death.
