Gary Thomas is Co-director of commissioning agency Animate Projects, and editor of Engine, an online magazine covering the range of independent moving image practice. He previously worked for Arts Council England for many years, supporting and advising artists and filmmakers including Jane and Louise Wilson, Steve McQueen, Andrew Kotting, Carol Morley, John Maybury, Clio Barnard, and hundreds more. As Head of Moving Image he initiated projects including Single-Shot (with UK Film Council) and SlotArt (Channel 4 and online), developed archive and digital strategies for artists’ work, and sat on the DCMS Digitisation Expert Group. He is a specialist advisor to the Scottish Arts Council, on the advisory board of no.w.here, and Chair of LUX. He has worked as a chef, in the music business, and was co-ordinator of the BP Expo International Student Film Festival for three years. He makes films with Tim Shore, including Cofiwch (S4C), Cabinet (Film London), and Burlesque (Capture).
