Ashley York is a mediamaker whose research interests include journalism, socially conscious media and digital activism. She has worked on Academy Award® nominated teams and served as an associate producer on documentary projects that have premiered at international film festivals as well as on HBO, Discovery International and the Sundance Channel. She recently concluded work as an associate producer on Kirby Dick’s theatrical feature, “Outrage,” which premiered and was an official selection at the Tribeca Film Festival. In addition to her work with Kirby Dick, she has worked with award-winning documentary filmmakers, including Mark Jonathan Harris, Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato and Billy Luther. As co-producer with Susana Ruiz, Ashley's work in the field of digital activism and games for social change led to the production of two critically acclaimed works, including "Darfur is Dying," which has garnered numerous new media honors and was said to be "one of the best presentations of life in Darfur" by Pulitzer Prize winner New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof. Ashley received a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts and is directing a multi-platform project (consisting of a feature length documentary and social issue game) about six Kentuckians who were sentenced to life in prison when they were teenagers. The documentary received the 2006 International Documentary Association/A&E Indie Films Production Grant in addition to funding support from USC's Annenberg School for Communication, The Fledgling Fund and the Pacific Pioneer Fund for emerging documentary filmmakers. She was a filmmaker in residence at Judith Helfand’s 2009 Working Film’s Content + Intent Documentary Institute at MASS MoCA as well as an artist in residence at the 2008 Bay Area Video Coalition's Producer's Institute for New Media Technologies.
