About Sheffield

About_sheffield_img_500x275

Sheffield is host to a wide variety of cultural standings, shifting from the great music scene that delivered bands such as Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, The Human League, Def Leppard and Moloko to the independent film culture that has become a major player within the Sheffield Cultural Industries Quarter focused closely to the main train and bus links for easy access.

The rise of independent film within local Sheffield cinemas is of extreme importance to the growth and stability of the Cultural Quarter. Establishments such as SIF (Sheffield Independent Film) and Sheffield Hallam University set in motion and support new talent arising from around the country and also from abroad. Courses such as Film and Media Production are extremely useful to budding filmmakers and the facilities available via SIF accommodate their needs and are there to fulfil their potential to become the next big director to come out of Sheffield.

The support and assistance given to independent film is clearly shown in one of the country’s biggest independent cinemas, The Showroom. Catering for a wide variety of interests The Showroom supports and encourages the rise of independent films, daily showing a diverse range of films from as far away as Kazakhstan to films made on Sheffield’s extremely culturally based doorstep. The Showroom also plays host to a well-developed and established café bar, ‘one of the most popular daytime and evening venues’ around Sheffield opening late Thursday to Saturday evenings playing host to live DJs and a Sunday lunchtime Jazz session.

Aside from Sheffield establishing new film talent, the music scene adds to the ever-growing cultural quarter. Acts such as Pulp emerged out of Sheffield, once playing at venues such as the Boardwalk and The Leadmill, which have become extremely popular with the vast amount of students arriving in the City. Venues such as the Plug nightclub and the newly opened Carling Academy play host to big bands such as The Automatic and the ever popular The Hoosier’s, alongside Sheffield’s well-known Hallam FM Arena just a short ride out of the city centre. Smaller venues such as West Street Live and the Mojo Club encourage new talent and add variety and flavour to the ever expanding Sheffield Music Scene.

Sheffield is expanding, the rise of new talent growing faster than the palm trees planted in the newly built award winning Winter Gardens situated in the centre of the city. Sheffield is developing the next generation, the next director, the next artist, the next band to Sheffield’s independent and cultural population.
