New Talent Opportunities

Every year there are a range of opportunities for young people and those who are new entrants to documentary and digital media.

There are hundreds of film and media university courses in the UK and each year tens of thousands of students graduate from these courses hoping to launch a career in film and television. There are very limited opportunities for getting a job working in the film, TV and media sector. Sheffield Doc/Fest is fast becoming recognised as one of the best events for graduates to use as a way to secure a direct route to industry.

Many students from other UK and European universities are already taking advantage of what Sheffield Doc/Fest has to offer to enhance the education their students receive and convert their academic achievements into real world skills and opportunities.

Sheffield Doc/Fest is not simply a festival, conference, marketplace and world-class film program. It is a creative super-connector, offering a unique hothouse experience for all that come to the festival, particularly for young people and students, for whom it is a genuinely transformative experience. Recent graduates often get their first career break at Sheffield Doc/Fest.

The Youth Jury

Since 2007 Doc/Fest has run the Youth Jury, when we invite five talented 16-21 year olds to take part in a rare opportunity to get involved in the docuemntary industry. Successful applicants form the judging panel that award one documentary the Sheffield Youth Jury Award at Sheffield Doc/Fest in June.

Prior to the Festival, they participate in the Youth Jury Hothouse here in Sheffield. During 3 intensive days, the jury view a selection of films, meet their favourite industry professionals like Michael Palin and dive head first into the world of documentary, learning skills to critically asses documentary film and to get inside knowledge on how the industry works. The youth jury is one of the rare opportunities for young people's voices to be heard in the media. But its also a great booster into the industry. Past jurors have gone on to make their own films for BBC3, take internships with broadcasters, start their own festivals and write for film publications.

Deadline has passed for this year.
