Mama Africa
Mika Kaurismaki / 2011 / Germany/South Africa/Finland
When the South African government exiled rising star Miriam Makeba for appearing in a documentary about apartheid in 1959, little did they realise they were pushing onto the world stage a unique singing talent and budding civil rights activist. Taken in by the US, Mama Africa was nurtured by Harry Belafonte, and became a big star, singing for Marlon Brando and JFK. The record companies soon shunned her when she married Black Panther firebrand Stokely Carmichael. They moved to Guinea and campaigned passionately for a united Africa, Makeba charming a generation of fawning African presidents. Her soft manner belied the steely nature of the woman determined to see her country free, and South Africa doubly exiled her when she became the first African to ask for a boycott. After the release of Nelson Mandela, she finally returned triumphantly to her homeland. As shown through the wonderfully rich performance archive, throughout her turbulent life Makeba's singing enraptured audiences, influencing generations of African musicians.
Kindly supported by University of Sheffield.

You've Been Trumped
Dir. Anthony Baxter / 2011 / UK
Winner of the 2011 Sheffield Green Award
Funny, inspiring and shocking in equal measure, this David and Goliath tale for the 21st Century documents what happens when Donald Trump arrives on Aberdeenshire's coast determined to build what he claims will be ''the world's greatest golf course". The proposal is met with fury by environmental groups - this is one of Britain's very last stretches of coastal wilderness, and a protected conservation area. But the Scottish Government, wooed by promises of '6,000 jobs across Scotland' overturns its own environmental laws to give the tycoon the green light.
Now Trump is running roughshod over anyone remaining in his path - including long-term residents whose homes threaten to mar the view (just like the off-shore wind farm planned for the coast). Water and power is cut off, land disputes erupt, and some residents have thousands of tonnes of earth piled up next to their homes. Complaints go ignored by the police, who instead arrest the film's director, Anthony Baxter, in what the National Union of Journalists calls an unprecedented breach of media freedom.

Robert Mugabe...What Happened?
Dir. Simon Bright / 2011 / UK
Billed as the definitive account of Mugabe's life, the film dramatically illustrates his successful liberation and development of the country but also his ruthless and cunning retention of power at all costs. The early promise of Mugabe's reign deteriorated and Bright was inspired to make the film after imprisonment for a short time in 2003, and so he slipped back across the border in 2007 to start research. Director Simon Bright joins Doc/Fest for a Q&A after the screening.

Aung San Suu Kyi - Lady of No Fear
Dir. Anne Gyrithe Bonne / 2011 / Denmark
Lady of No Fear offers a close-up of the freedom fighting woman Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband, her knight in shining armour Dr Michael Aris, who died on his 53rd birthday in 1999, still unable to see his wife. She comes across as charming, determined and stoical in her decision to fight for her country at the expense of her family. The focus is on the personal consequences of such powerful idealism and conviction that the current regime can be toppled by peaceful means. The film is a tribute to the woman at the heart of the rebellion, her steadfast husband and supporter, and not least to Gandhi's vision of non-violent civic resistance.
