This award honours the short films in the Festival, made by new and established filmmakers from around the world. The winner of the Short Doc Award at Doc/Fest will go on to qualify for the 2017 Academy Awards.

Alternate Realities Interactive Award
An international jury of film and interactive media industry experts award this prize to the project that exhibits originality in its approach to form, storytelling and delivery. One of only a few such awards in the documentary world, Sheffield Doc/Fest is dedicated to recognising new platforms for inetractive storytelling.

Alternate Realities VR Award
Sheffield Doc/Fest is extremely pleased to announce the first Virtual Reality Award for the 2016 Festival. To celebrate the ever-growing number of high-quality VR documentaries in what has now become a new creative genre, we have introduced a new Alternate Realities VR award, with this year's projects being considered by an all-female jury.

Tim Hetherington Award supported by Dogwoof
Dogwoof, Sheffield Doc/Fest and the Tim Hetherington Trust award a film and filmmaker which best reflects journalist Tim Hetherington’s legacy. Hetherington has said: "My main objective is to take audiences to a faraway place that they could never travel to without the help of an intrepid filmmaker. This is the challenge that still excites me."
Award for Unsung Hero in Factual TV supported by Channel 5
This new award honours a vital, under-the-radar contribution to British factual television.
