Documentary Commission Opportunity: ‘What Became of Thatcher’s Children?’

The University of Sheffield is looking for individuals or teams to make a short educational documentary film, 15-20 minutes long, as part of an Economic and Social Research Council-funded research project.

The research is about two key subjects:

  1. the experiences of crime, victimisation, and attitudes towards punishment of a large cohort of people born in 1970;
  2. the contemporary relevance of ‘Thatcherite’ social and economic values today, some 40 or so years after Margaret Thatcher entered Downing Street.

The University is seeking to commission a new film primarily constructed from archival footage of the period, and can rely on some of the earlier footage filmed for previous University of Sheffield commission Generation Right. The trailer for Generation Right can be found here. Further details about the on-going research project can be found here:

The Purpose / Audience

The film will serve three purposes:

  • firstly as a vehicle for attracting interest in making a longer film(s) from film production companies;
  • secondly as a teaching resource for those studying A Levels in topics such as sociology, modern history and politics;
  • finally as a vehicle for explaining key results of the project to a general audience.

Eventually the film will be made available online.

The film will be approximately 15-20 minutes long.
