Another year, another story. We’re excited to open submissions for the 25th Sheffield Doc/Fest Film & Alternate Realities programmes, to discover the best new works in documentary and non-fiction storytelling globally. Read below for information on how to submit your film or project, and a note from our programmes on what we're looking for.
A Message from Our Programmers
Our film programme welcomes submissions from new, emerging and established filmmakers based anywhere in the world. I’m particularly passionate about encountering new voices offering challenging, authentic and radical ways of seeing the contemporary world and reinterpreting the past.
The cinema is a forum for plural debate and a space for entertainment, we want to see a diverse films ranging from those that make us laugh to those that shake our body and vibrate our soul. No film is too short or long, no style, form or subject matter is excluded (other than pure fiction!).
Alongside the Grand Jury Award, New Talent Award and Oscar qualifying Short Documentary Award, we will continue to champion creative and experimental documentary with the Art Doc Award, vital stories of impact through the Environmental Award, powerful journalism with the Tim Hetherington Award and new visions of human experience through the Illuminate Award.
Luke W Moody
Director of Film Programming
The Alternate Realities programme welcomes submissions from creatives from any discipline, whether you be a filmmaker, creative technologist, game maker or theatre practitioner. If you have a compelling non-fiction story that can be experienced through immersive or interactive media then then we invite you to submit your work for consideration.
For 2018 I am keen to further explore the diversity we see in the world around us and showcase stories from voices of the present and the past that bring new perspectives. I am interested in stories from the Global South and in multi-user experiences that connect us to one another. I am also interested in non-human narratives that connect us to science and nature.
We showcase the work we select in an exhibition that is focused on story and experience and is sympathetic to the art and the intention of the artist. Alternate Realities also rewards the work with three awards: the Virtual Reality Award, the Interactive Award and the Audience Award.
Thanks to support from Arts Council England to tour projects from our 2018 Alternate Realities Exhibition to venues across the UK this Autumn, and to British Council for a second Realidades Alternativas tour to Latin America this Winter, projects selected for Doc/Fest will have the chance to be seen beyond Sheffield and beyond June as part of our touring activity.
