Need some advice on how to navigate the international documentary industry and take your project forward? Drop by the Marketplace Switchboard in Cutlers’ Hall. Our Switchboard Mentors, Danielle and Jean-Jacques, are available to offer guidance on packaging your project, intel on industry Decision Makers and feedback on your pitch. No need to make an appointment, drop by anytime 9:30-17:30 on Monday and Tuesday. 

Meet our 2019 Mentors  

Danielle McCarthy

Danielle oversees the the Marketplace at the Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC), where she manages a slate of initiatives aimed at project development and connecting filmmakers with industry decision makers. Prior to joining AIDC Danielle worked in producing and programming roles at film festivals including Tribeca, TIFF, Sundance, and the Melbourne International Film Festival. She also has a background in production, and worked on Steve McQueen's award-winning film Shame, as well as being a producer and first AD in Australia.

 

Jean-Jacques Peretti

Since 2002 Peretti has been in charge of the international relations for Sunny Side of the Doc, the International Documentary Market. He organized the Sunny Side seminars on co-production abroad, in places such as New-York, Toronto, Washington, Montreal, London, Sofia, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong and Seoul. Previously, for 10 years, Peretti worked in Paris as a production manager, specialized in Documentary series and one offs with companies such as Gloria Films Productions, MK2 and Les Films d’Ici.

BFI Network

The BFI NETWORK’s mission is to support talented writers, directors and producers at the start of their careers, who haven’t yet had a fiction feature film produced and distributed. Made possible through National Lottery funding, we collaborate with film organisations and leading cultural venues across the UK to provide short film and early feature development funding, industry-backed professional development and networking support.


BBC New Talent

BBC Studios produces around 2000 hours of content every year for UK and global broadcasters and Digital channels, across a range of genres and specialisms. Our work includes Dramas, landmark Natural History, Comedy and Entertainment and a range of Factual programming – including Observational documentaries, History, Science, Arts, Religion, Music, and Digital.

The BFI Certification Unit

The BFI Certification Unit is the first point of contact for applicants wanting to qualify their film (including shorts), video games, high-end television programme, animation television programme or children’s television programme as British in order to access the UK’s creative sector tax reliefs. BFI Certification Analysts Chantel Burrell and Stuart Burnside are on hand to talk to you about the process for certifying your project as British and accessing the tax relief to help finance your documentaries or other projects. Equity and Debt Financing

There are a variety of ways to finance documentaries, commissions, grants, broadcast sales, distributor MGs, tax rebates – among others. To offer advice and help demystify equity and debt financing, Ian Davies from Initialize Films will be available for consultation. Ian previously ran Interdoc, a documentary development programme, which helped finance films like The English Surgeon and The Island and the Whales. He now co-finances fiction and documentary projects through Initialize Films and Amber Content. Previous titles include Time Trial and Gary Numan: Android in La La Land.  

BFI Young Audiences Content Fund

A £57m three year pilot, the Young Audiences Content Fund (YACF) was launched by the BFI in April to support the creation of distinctive, high-quality content for audiences up to the age of 18. Development and production funding is available for new programming in all genres, including documentary, to air on free-to-access, Ofcom regulated television and online platforms with significant UK audience reach. Financed by the UK Government, the Fund is seeking content that entertains, informs and reflects the experiences of children and young people growing up in the UK today.
