Sheffield Doc/Fest is pleased to announce today that Cíntia Gil has been appointed Festival Director. Cíntia joins from DocLisboa where she has served as Festival Director since 2012; she will take up the Doc/Fest position in November, following the October edition of DocLisboa.

She has a deep knowledge of, and passion for, documentaries together with a wealth of international connections to bring to Sheffield. What’s more she has the vision and the leadership to build on the Festival’s success and take it into a new decade.”

Says Melanie Iredale, who stepped up as Interim Director for the 2019 edition and has held the post of Deputy Director since 2014, “On behalf of the Doc/Fest team we are so excited to welcome Cíntia to the Doc/Fest family; she brings new, creative energy, ideas and experience and we are looking forward to working with her to deliver future festivals. It has been a privilege to deliver the 2019 edition, and I look forward to working closely with Cíntia to plan and produce the 2020 festival – and beyond.
Born in Portugal, Cíntia Gil studied at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema (Lisbon Theatre and Film School) and holds a degree in Philosophy from the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto (Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Porto). Since 2012, Cíntia Gil served as the director of Doclisboa, Portugal’s most important and steadily expanding documentary film festival. Gil has curated a variety of contemporary and historical film series, retrospectives, and exhibitions. In addition, she has been a member of the executive board of Apordoc – Associação pelo Documentário, the Portuguese documentary film association since 2015. Gil, whose texts have appeared in numerous publications on philosophy and art, is also a regular guest at panel discussions and conferences, and on international festival juries such as Berlinale, Mar del Plata, FIDMarseille among others.
