The students who make up the reception class of Grand Aux Belles junior high school in Paris couldn't be more different. They hail from all over the world – from both the most harrowing and mundane of circumstances. Whilst they have many reasons for recently immigrating to Paris, they share a common goal: to learn French well enough to join the mainstream class. In a film pleasingly evocative of Etre et Avoir, we observe them over a school year under the patient, empathetic guidance of their teacher. As she meets with their parents, and has students make a film about their lives, a panoply of transnational stories emerges. Director Julie Bertucelli allows these narratives to unfold at their own pace, in a film that movingly captures the difficulties of cultural assimilation, the astonishing ability of the young to adapt to new situations, and the overriding importance of teenage friendship.
