“Offshore” normally brings to mind unscrupulous dealings involving fictional companies and secret bank accounts. But for activist-artist Dr Rebecca Gomperts, “offshore” presented an opportunity to pose more urgent questions: “Do women have the basic human right to decide what is happening with their bodies?” Started in 2001, Women on Waves was designed as a mobile clinic-on-sea that would sail to countries where abortion was illegal. Gomperts’s crew was able to provide support and pharmaceuticals to women seeking to terminate their pregnancies as long as they remained in international waters, whereupon the laws of the flagship would apply (and abortion is legal in the Netherlands). Following Women on Waves for seven years, director Diana Whitten’s first feature documentary shows how a small group of agitators overcome aggressive resistance – from “Nazi” taunts to being egged by protesters – to become champions for reproductive rights.
