Judgment in Hungary
  • Year2013
  • Duration107 min

The grief, anger, and repressed guilt fill the space with an ominous still. Fragments of an ordinary morning leading up to a tragic event are being stitched together. The victims include a man and his son, amongst others; slowly, the story unfolds like corners turned, each more horrific than the last. In a sunken courtroom reminiscent of an ancient Greek amphitheatre, four neo-Nazi defendants sit just an arm’s length away from the witnesses as they take the stand to testify. The racially motivated murders in the Hungarian village of Tartarszentgyorgy were amongst a series of brutal attacks on rural Roma communities between 2007 and 2008. Relying on the court process alone as source material for reconstructing the crime, award-winning filmmaker Eszter Hajdú shows the excruciating process of law in all its displays of power, as well as the racist oppression – both overt and subtle – faced daily by the Roma people.
