Raised on a healthy dose of action films and video games in middle-class Baltimore, Matt VanDyke had always dreamt of setting off on an adventure in Africa and the Middle East, like Lawrence of Arabia, his favourite film from childhood. Armed with a motorcycle and a camera, he embarked on a transformative “crash course on manhood” that would come to define his life. His plans of making an adventure travel documentary was awkwardly enmeshed in his vanity and his OCD, all of which retreated to the background when he became fast friends with a group of young Libyans. In 2011, VanDyke returned to Benghazi to support their fight against Gaddafi and was violently ambushed; he was subsequently held in solitary confinement for over five months. Academy Award-nominated director Marshall Curry captures one man’s dizzying, harrowing initiation into manhood and examines the dehumanising effects of war.
