For the first time in Robert Mugabe’s four decades of tyranny, there is legitimate hope for a more representative political future in Zimbabwe. Douglas Mwonzora, the admirably passionate yet cool-headed legal advisor of the oppositional party, is engaged in a tortuous constitution-making process with the country’s leading political figures, including the ageing despot’s trusted yes-man Paul Mangwana. The two are pitted as mutual nemeses in the film, which is a compelling blow-by-blow account of the uphill struggle to democracy. While the ruling party ZANU-PF is busy putting together “public support” rent-a-crowds and arresting Mwonzora on dud charges, a copy of the draft constitution has been quietly leaked to the media, sending Mugabe and his people into a tailspin. Documentary maker Camilla Nielsson captures Zimbabwe’s long prelude to democracy amidst real and fabricated distractions, demonstrating the difficulties of working against (and around) absolute power.
