Chavela
  • Year2017
  • Duration90 min

Co-directors Catherine Gund and Daresha Kyi interweave candid stories told by the Mexican ranchera singer Chavela Vargas and those closest to her in this multi-faceted biographical film. An incomparable performer, she was also a lesbian who defied all social norms. Among her admirers were Frida Kahlo and Pedro Almodóvar, the latter of whom revived her musical legacy in the 1990s.
