“Kids from Kilburn don’t win the Tour de France”, asserts Bradley Wiggins. It’s late 2011, and he and his team are getting ready to attempt the impossible: A British win in the world’s most famous cycling race. Filmmaker John Dower is along for the ride, and as the celebratory adulation grows with every Wiggins win, Dower probes the prickly enigmatic man behind the myth. Wiggins’ wife Cath feels she is married to two men: a marvellous husband and the cyclist who “is a bit of a twat”. Abandoned by his father as a toddler, Wiggins naturally took to the sport which was his father’s undoing. As he heads into the gruelling tour, where journalists outnumber cyclists by ten to one, Wiggins finds life in the spotlight difficult. He somehow maintains his focus to achieve the impossible dream: triumphing at both the Tour de France and the London Olympics in a spectacular summer for British sport. CN
