Expat Afghanis returned to their homeland after the ousting of the Taliban, determined to bring culture and hope to a land where neither existed. Amongst them were the Mohseni family, who left Australia to set up a broadcasting network in Kabul. Despite no previous experience, and amongst the ongoing daily terrors of life in Kabul, the Tolo network took off like wildfire: “You go into villages that haven’t seen the wheel yet, and a television is hooked up to a car battery and fifty people are watching Tolo,” recounts one of the many fascinating interviewees featured. Tolo executives were determined to use television to entertain a brutalised populace. But desperate to pull Afghanistan out of the dark ages, they also offer up programmes which raise awareness of the viewers’ human rights. Amidst escalating violence, the jury is out on whether television can truly help change a country still mired in turmoil, where the future remains bleak. CN
