The Spirit of '45
  • Year2012
  • Duration94 min

In 1945, Labour won a landslide victory in parliament and quickly set into motion a grand socialist plan that would dramatically alter post-war Britain. One top priority was human welfare: people were living in squalor and poverty was rife. Within the first five years, the government nationalised all the key industries upon the basis of common ownership and its "equitable production, distribution, and exchange". Yet the public-spirited era was not meant to last, as institutions were put up for competitive tender one by one; of the '45 legacy, only the NHS remains and recent reforms have made it all but privatised. Juxtaposing archival footage with contemporary interviews and reminiscences, acclaimed filmmaker Ken Loach revisits a progressive Britain fuelled by optimism. For us Brits who are in dire need of a pick-me-up, this is a wonderful reminder of collective power - and crucially, of what idealism can achieve. S.W ‘it is films like this that will spark change for the better.’ Harley Ryley, Warwick Art Centre
