Rafea: Solar Mama
  • Year2012
  • Duration76 min

An illiterate Bedouin woman, Rafea has her hands full: she looks after four daughters and a lay about husband, as they struggle to survive in a tent in the Jordanian desert. When she is offered the chance to travel to India to train to be a solar engineer, she grabs it, and finds herself learning a trade amidst other impoverished women from around the world. In this jewel from the Why Poverty strand, Directors Mona Eldaief and Jehane Noujaim follow Rafea’s difficult journey, as she is pulled between the escalating demands of the family she left behind, and her determination to grasp the future she has been offered. For Rafea, learning how to be a solar engineer is the easy part – what is infinitely more difficult is breaking the entrenched Bedouin mindset that a woman’s place is in the home, serving her husband.
