Despite the fall of the Berlin wall and the lifting of the Iron Curtain some 23 years ago, Russia has remained an elusive mystery for the West, save for the odd media stunt that shows a bare-chested Vladimir Putin performing superhuman feats. However, it is the flipside of the staged bravado that filmmakers Tikhonova and Spritzendorfer hone in on: the zany, sonic universe of DIY electronic music-making. Since all technological developments in the Soviet era were strictly patrolled, self-taught sound engineers must resort to theft and clandestine exchanges for machine parts -- which in turn enabled some important innovation to take place outside of state-prescribed programmes. Featuring a cast of whip-smart punks from 25 to 65 waxing poetic about analogue machines, the KGB, and talking plastic toys with equal excitement, Elektro Moscow draws a striking parallel between the scavenging intelligence of these sound lovers to a bigger story about Russian endurance and survival.
