Inspired by the artist’s mother, who travelled to the US in search of the American Dream, this single-screen work is an exploration of sacrifice and aspiration.
Armenian artist Diana Markosian dramatically reconstructs her own story, questioning the profound sacrifice made by her mother who abandoned her country and husband by becoming a ‘mail-order bride’. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Markosian arrived with her mother in Santa Barbara, a city known in the former USSR because it was the name of a soap opera and the first US TV show to air in the country in the 1980s. It was also home to Eli, the man who would marry Markosian’s mother and take the place of her father.-
